Community-based mental health and recovery service calls Pullman home
The Whitman Recovery Community Center officially opened its doors in Pullman, providing vital mental health and peer recovery services to the community. Located at 226 E. Main St. , the grand opening celebration includes ice cream, live music, and games for attendees. Director Megan Guido stated that the initiative arose from a grassroots effort to meet local behavioral health needs, supported by a $186,000 grant from the Washington Healthcare Authority to establish the center.
This facility emphasizes peer support, offering services like trauma-informed yoga and meditation rather than traditional clinical approaches. According to Guido, community connection is crucial for recovery, and the center aims to dispel misconceptions that it serves as a rehabilitation facility. The center also responds to a 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment, which identified mental and behavioral health as a top priority, with 55% of residents reporting increased feelings of isolation. By situating the center downtown, Guido believes it enhances inclusivity and strengthens the community. The center is open Monday through Friday and invites anyone interested in mental health support to participate in its offerings.
