An examination of President Cantwells WSU contract Furloughs, football games and more

Pullman, WALocal News

Elizabeth Cantwell, the newly appointed president of Washington State University (WSU), may need to take up to 60 days of unpaid furlough annually as part of a budget reduction plan approved by the WSU Board of Regents. Her contract stipulates a base salary of $735,000, with an additional potential $150,000 incentive bonus tied to annual performance goals. Former President Kirk Schulz took voluntary furlough days early in his presidency, and he will receive $765,000 during his upcoming year-long sabbatical. The university has implemented a freeze on nonessential spending due to financial challenges resulting from state and federal funding cuts. WSU spokesperson Phil Weiler stated that it remains uncertain whether the next budget will include furloughs for state workers, depending on legislative outcomes.

As WSU navigates these fiscal pressures, Cantwell's role will also involve attending all home football games and staying in the Ida Lou Anderson house until year-end. The potential furloughs highlight the serious budgetary constraints WSU faces. Legislative decisions will ultimately dictate the final budget structure and any associated furlough requirements.
