Pullman Fire Chief Mike Heston has announced his retirement, set for February 7, 2025, after an impressive 42-year career dedicated to the Pullman community. Heston's leadership extends beyond his role as Fire Chief; he also serves as the City of Pullman Emergency Manager and Chair of the Whitman County Local Emergency Planning Commission. Mayor Francis Benjamin lauded Heston for his thoughtful leadership and genuine care for residents, emphasizing the significant impact he has had on the community. Beginning his career in Moses Lake, Heston joined the WSU Fire Department as a student before transitioning to a full-time position and later moving to the Pullman Fire Department as Assistant Fire Chief in 1996. His appointment as Fire Chief in 2013 marked a pivotal moment in his career, showcasing his extensive experience and commitment to public safety.

Post-retirement, Heston aims to stay active within the community, continuing his work with All Hazard Incident Management Teams while also volunteering with Scouting America and the Lion’s Club. He looks forward to pursuing personal interests such as woodworking and fishing, as well as spending quality time with his family. Heston's legacy in Pullman is characterized by his unwavering dedication to service and community involvement.
