Washington State University achieved a record $19 million in royalty revenues during the 2025 fiscal year, nearly doubling the amount generated in 2024. The Cosmic Crisp apple emerged as a leading product, generating over $8 million in royalties. Other notable contributors included five wheat varieties and a pharmacy-based vaccine administration system developed in collaboration with the American Pharmacists Association. Additionally, the university's innovations in food safety and medical testing contributed to its financial success, including a test for dogs' medication sensitivity and neurodivergent disorder screening. WSU's policy allows inventors to earn 100% of the first $10,000 in royalties and a 50% share thereafter, incentivizing local innovation.
Over the past decade, WSU has generated more than $82 million in royalties, reflecting a sustained trend of eight-figure earnings. This financial success not only supports the university's research endeavors but also fosters local economic growth. The ongoing collaboration between WSU and various industries enhances the university's role in advancing technology and health solutions.
