Judge Hippler orders more restitution from Kohberger
Ada County Judge Steven Hippler mandated that Bryan Kohberger pay an additional $3,007 in restitution for urn purchases for the Goncalves family and Karen Laramie, linked to the 2022 Moscow murders. Kohberger's total financial obligations now include $251,227 in criminal fines and fees, and a civil judgment of $20,000 for each victim's family. His attorneys argued against further restitution due to his inability to earn money while serving four life sentences. However, Judge Hippler noted that Kohberger has accumulated $28,360 in donations from family and the public while in custody. He also stated that Kohberger has the opportunity to earn money through prison employment.
Hippler expressed confidence that Kohberger could meet his financial obligations over time. This ruling was issued on the three-year anniversary of the murders that took the lives of University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, and Xana Kernodle. The case continues to draw attention in the local community as Kohberger faces the consequences of his actions.
