Firm to look at aging Latah County jail

Pullman, WALocal News

Latah County has contracted Clearwater Financial to assist in preparing a bond proposal for a new jail, as the current facility is outdated and inadequate. Sheriff Richard Skiles highlighted that the 53-year-old jail does not comply with modern standards and is only functional during court hours, forcing the transport of inmates to Nez Perce County jail after hours. The county's recent purchase of a used van will facilitate this transport. Clearwater Financial's $12,000 contract includes educating the public about the jail's needs and gathering opinions on the proposed facility. Commissioner Tony Johnson noted that while the process is slow, they are making steady progress.

The initiative addresses serious safety and operational concerns regarding the aging jail. A public survey will help gauge community support for the new facility, which is crucial for securing funding. The county aims to ensure that the new jail meets current safety standards and operational needs.
