Moscow looking at new body cameras, stun guns
The Moscow City Council will vote on October 20 to approve a $399,183 investment in new body-worn cameras, in-car cameras, and stun guns for the Moscow Police Department. Capt. Dustin Blaker highlighted that the current equipment suffers from maintenance issues, including battery problems and recording malfunctions. The department's existing camera provider, WatchGuard, has supplied equipment since 2012, while the stun gun model is no longer manufactured by Taser. The proposed agreement with Axon Enterprises will cover a five-year period, with the department having $200,000 from a billing error reimbursement and another $200,000 in the city’s general fund.
Blaker emphasized that other suppliers do not offer both cameras and stun guns, making Axon a suitable choice. The Pullman and Lewiston police departments have successfully partnered with Axon for years, and their positive feedback influenced Moscow's decision. This investment aims to enhance police operations and community safety. The vote on this funding request is critical for modernizing the department's equipment.
