Kootenai County deputy dies in UTV crash near Elk River

Dale Law, a 43-year-old deputy with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, died following a UTV crash near Elk River on Friday morning. The Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office reported that Law was ejected when the UTV rolled off an old logging road. Authorities began searching for an overdue person around 1:41 a. m. , deploying pickups, UTVs, a drone, and a helicopter in the effort.

Local hunters aided in the search, leading to the discovery of the UTV near the South Fork of Robinson Creek by noon. Law, a resident of Hayden, Idaho, was known for his commitment to public safety. His death underscores the dangers law enforcement personnel face in rural environments. The incident has raised concerns regarding safety protocols for off-road vehicles used by deputies. Community members are mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant.
