Officials Bird flu detected near Pullman
Bird flu has been detected in wild geese in rural Whitman County, near Pullman, prompting health officials to issue a community alert. The Whitman County Public Health District advises residents to avoid handling sick or dead wildlife, recommending the use of personal protective equipment for those who must do so. Chris Skidmore, the district director, emphasized the increased risk of contact with infected birds during migratory seasons. The highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza has circulated globally and was first identified in the U. S.
in 2022. Although human infections are rare, the district encourages caution when exposure is possible. Cleaning bird droppings with a 1:10 bleach solution is recommended, along with avoiding raw or undercooked foods. Hunters are urged to wear protective gear and clean tools and surfaces thoroughly after processing wild game. Individuals who find dead birds should call the health district for further guidance.
