West Park students dig into fruits and veggies program

Pullman, WALocal News

West Park Elementary students have embarked on a yearlong exploration of fruits and vegetables, funded by a $17,000 grant from the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. This program aims to foster healthy eating habits among the 236 students, with 46% qualifying for free or reduced lunches. Principal Marianne Sletteland emphasized the difference it could make in their diets, while Student Nutrition Director Kendra Holden expressed a desire for all district schools to benefit from the initiative. Students enjoy free healthy snacks in the afternoon, leading to positive reactions, particularly to items like cantaloupe. The program also includes educational components, with teachers designing lessons around the produce, encouraging children to journal their experiences.

Holden noted that the initiative requires extra time from kitchen staff, but it significantly benefits students' health. As the program progresses, staff look forward to introducing more exotic fruits, enhancing the children's exposure to diverse foods. This initiative not only addresses nutritional needs but also promotes an engaging learning experience for the students.
