Forest Service plans to begin prescribed burns
The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest plans to perform prescribed burns on two timber sales, covering a total of 211 acres, to assist in wildfire management. Fire specialist Jim Wimer stressed the urgency of these burns, stating that timely completion is essential for reforestation efforts scheduled for next spring. The burning may start as soon as next week, contingent on suitable weather and agency approval. Currently, the Island Creek Fire is the largest wildfire in the area, having scorched nearly 15,000 acres and remaining only 5% contained. The East Fire and Mire Fire have also posed challenges, burning 2,200 acres and 1,388 acres, respectively.
Wimer noted that the forecast for rain could enhance firefighting conditions, which are critical as hunting seasons approach. Forest officials are eager to restore public access to areas affected by the fires. The situation underscores the importance of wildfire management and proactive measures in forest maintenance.
