Pullman 10-year-old Wesley Carl overcame his own condition
Wesley Carl, a 10-year-old from Pullman, has taken on the role of Youth Heart Ambassador after successfully overcoming a congenital heart defect. He will promote the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge in local schools to encourage healthier living among youth. After experiencing a concerning chest sensation during a birthday party, Wesley was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect and underwent open-heart surgery in November 2023. His recovery was swift, and he returned to sports within three months, demonstrating resilience and determination. Wesley aims to inspire other children facing similar challenges by sharing his story.
His aspiration to become a professional athlete, particularly a quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, highlights his passion for sports. The Bengals have shown support by sending him a letter and merchandise, acknowledging his journey. Through his ambassadorship, Wesley hopes to motivate peers to engage in heart health initiatives and physical activities.
