Man arrested in August SWAT standoff pleads guilty to multiple charges
James Shepard, 47, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges stemming from an August standoff with the Latah County Regional SWAT team. He received a 16-day jail sentence for a misdemeanor charge of publicly displaying sexually offensive material. Latah County Deputy Prosecutor Keith Scholl confirmed that Shepard also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm, with sentencing for this felony set to occur this fall. As part of a plea deal, authorities dismissed a charge of discharging a firearm within city limits. Shepard's arrest on August 20 followed his firing of a gun outside his home and subsequent barricading when police arrived.
Earlier that day, law enforcement had cited him for displaying sexually explicit signs at his residence, prompting community concerns about public safety. The incident underscores ongoing issues regarding local ordinances and public behavior. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as Shepard awaits further sentencing.
