Island Creek Fire grows to 14,000 acres

Pullman, WALocal News

The Island Creek Fire has expanded to nearly 14,000 acres and is only 5% contained as of September 3, 2025. Firefighters are struggling against hazardous conditions created by dead trees from the 2015 Wash Fire, which contribute to heavy smoke and poor visibility. Helicopters are actively involved in bucket drops to combat the blaze, while ground teams employ indirect tactics to safeguard firefighters. Jon Word, Forest Supervisor, has closed sections of the forest along the Selway River, including parts of Idaho Game Management units 12 and 16, to ensure public safety. Additionally, local crews are managing the 15-acre White Pine Fire near the Giant White Pine Campground, leading to evacuation preparations for residents.

Excessive heat and low humidity are exacerbating fire behavior, although a forecast indicates cooler weather and rain may arrive later in the week. The incident management team is also overseeing firefighting efforts on the East and Mire fires north of the Lochsa River. These efforts highlight the ongoing challenges faced by firefighting teams in the region.
