Latah County sets aside 1M for jail land purchase
Latah County Commissioners approved a budget exceeding $43 million, which allocates funds for employee wage increases and sets aside $1 million for a future jail land purchase. Commissioner Tony Johnson opposed the budget, arguing that the wage hikes were too high during a time when fiscal conservatism is essential. Many residents expressed support for the wage increases during public hearings, emphasizing the need for living wages for county employees. The county plans to cease full-time jail operations this fall, necessitating the transport of arrested individuals to the Nez Perce County jail, which raises concerns about response times for law enforcement. The budget also includes costs for transportation and two new sheriff vehicles to facilitate this change.
Commissioner Jason Stooks acknowledged the jail's failure to meet Idaho standards, likening the situation to operating an unlicensed restaurant. While he was hesitant about the wage increases, he ultimately sided with Commissioner Tom Lamar, who argued that higher wages help retain employees. The county also benefits from $360,000 in savings due to the absence of costs related to Bryan Kohberger's trial.
