Large painting at WSU celebrates Virginia Woolf and sister Vanessa Bell

Pullman, WALocal News

Jiemei Lin, an arts assistant professor at Washington State University, is nearing completion of a mural featuring Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell at the Terrell Library. This mural is the first to celebrate the library’s extensive Woolf collection, which includes nearly 10,000 books and materials. Lin aims for the artwork to foster engagement with the collection and honor the sisters' contributions to literature and art. She emphasizes their close friendship and collaboration, showcasing Bell's artistic style through vibrant colors and floral elements. Funded by former library administrator Nancy Spitzer, the mural stands as a tribute to women artists during a time when the art world was predominantly male.

Lin’s design incorporates Bell’s visual elements from book covers, adding depth to the mural’s narrative. The library's collection, which features personal letters and manuscripts, is accessible to the public Monday through Friday, from 9 a. m. to 4:30 p. m.

This initiative highlights the historical significance of Woolf and Bell, inspiring future generations of women artists.
