Through a hometown lens
Barry Kough, who served as photo editor for the Lewiston Tribune, documented Charles Bronson during the filming of "Breakheart Pass" in Idaho. The 1975 film, featuring a dramatic train wreck scene, was shot along the Camas Prairie Railroad, a landmark for local history. Kough stood just 20 feet away as the train cars derailed, creating a tense moment that he vividly remembers. Despite the film's mixed reviews, it has maintained a unique status in the memories of the north central Idaho community. Kough's photos include a striking portrait of Bronson, who balanced celebrity status with everyday habits, such as brewing coffee over a camp stove.
The filming took place before the advent of digital editing, adding pressure to capture each scene perfectly. Kough’s recollections and photographs highlight the film's significance and its ties to the region's identity. His experience on set offers a glimpse into the local impact of Hollywood productions.
