Thanks to volunteers, 40 years of literacy at Cottonwood

Pullman, WALocal News

The Prairie Community Library in Cottonwood celebrated its 40th anniversary with a festive "Christmas in July" event, reflecting the community's strong commitment to literacy. Carissa Jones, a dedicated volunteer and vice president of the library board, engages children in activities while distributing books. The library operates without tax funding, relying entirely on community donations and volunteer efforts, with 95% of its 18,000 books donated. Coleen Wilson, treasurer of the board, emphasized the essential role of community support in the library's operations. As laws in Idaho restrict library materials, Prairie Community Library has remained complaint-free, benefiting from its close relationship with patrons.

This independent structure allows the library to adapt to individual needs, fostering a love for reading among children. The environment is lively and welcoming, encouraging patrons to enjoy their time rather than remain silent. Volunteers view empowering children through literacy as a vital part of their mission.
