Idaho lawmakers launch DOGE task force

Pullman, WALocal News

Idaho legislators gathered on Friday to discuss a newly formed task force focused on enhancing government efficiency, modeled after the federal Department of Government Efficiency. This initiative aims to consolidate state agencies and eliminate unnecessary positions, with plans to implement actionable policies in the upcoming session. Rep. Jeff Ehlers highlighted the importance of having a structured approach to this task, potentially meeting monthly to ensure progress. The meeting featured insights from Jared Tatro, who noted the last major reorganization of Idaho's executive branch occurred in 1972, resulting in 20 departments overseeing over 205 sub-units today.

The committee is exploring the efficiency strategies of Arkansas as a potential model for their own reforms. Tatro pointed out peculiarities within state codes that may complicate the restructuring process. Sen. Todd Lakey acknowledged the need for collaboration with the executive branch to navigate this initiative effectively. The task force aims to create a clearer framework for state agency operations, enhancing public access and understanding of government services.
