Pertussis outbreak reported in Whitman County

Pullman, WALocal News

Whitman County Public Health confirmed a pertussis outbreak, the first in three months, prompting health officials to advise close contacts of infected individuals to seek medical advice. Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is especially dangerous for infants under one year old, starting with cold-like symptoms that escalate into severe coughing. Early detection and treatment with antibiotics can significantly reduce the risk of spreading the infection. Those infected should isolate for at least five days following antibiotic treatment or stay home for 21 days after symptoms appear. Immunizations are vital for prevention, with infants receiving the DTaP vaccine in a series of five doses and adolescents advised to get the Tdap booster.

Adults who have never received a Tdap booster are also recommended to get one dose. Pregnant women should receive the Tdap vaccine during their third trimester to protect newborns. This outbreak underscores the importance of vaccination and early intervention to control the spread of pertussis in the community.
