Small field fire extinguished

A small field fire ignited at Washington State University’s Spillman Farms on Monday afternoon, burning approximately four acres of standing grain and experimental plots. Whitman County Fire District 12 Chief Lester Erwin stated that the blaze was caused by a combine producing sparks. Volunteer firefighters responded promptly at 1 p. m. , and two tractors—one from Spillman and another from a neighboring farm—were deployed to plow around the flames.

The Moscow Rural Volunteer Fire Department contributed to the effort by sending two trucks for additional support. No injuries were reported, and the quick response helped prevent extensive damage to the research farm. The area is known for its agricultural research, emphasizing the importance of fire safety in such environments. Fire incidents like this highlight the need for ongoing training and preparedness among local volunteer firefighter teams. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with agricultural equipment during dry conditions.
