Pullman mayor confident as the city negotiates administrative turnover
Pullman Mayor Francis Benjamin reassured residents about the city's management amid recent leadership changes, including the resignations of the fire chief and city administrator. The search for a new city administrator is moving faster than anticipated, with interviews scheduled for August. Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Scharnhorst has been appointed interim fire chief until the new administrator is hired, allowing the future leader to participate in the selection process. Former Police Chief Jake Opgenorth resigned following an investigation into allegations of assault, while former City Administrator Mike Urban was placed on administrative leave and later resigned under disputed circumstances. Urban's departure remains unclear, with conflicting accounts from him and city officials.
Benjamin emphasized the city's robust staff structure, which has maintained service continuity during this transition, stating, “We have incredible city staff and leadership. ” The community will have opportunities to meet candidates for city administrator and provide feedback to aid in the selection process, ensuring public input in the hiring decision. Benjamin expressed optimism about the city's future and the potential for new leadership to bring positive change.
