Cherry Fire fully contained as crews continue mop-up

Pullman, WALocal News

The Cherry Fire near Deary, Idaho, is now fully contained, with local crews taking over mop-up operations. Starting on July 14 in an active timber operation, the fire quickly grew to 113 acres before being surrounded by firefighters. Although rain has fallen in the area, officials have not yet declared the fire out, as crews search for and extinguish remaining heated coals beneath large slash piles. The Idaho Department of Lands has assumed management of the fire and is preparing to redirect resources to other fire incidents as needed. Residents are advised to stay clear of the area while mop-up operations are in progress.

Investigators are still working to determine the fire's cause. Historically, wildfires in this region often stem from human activity, and the Department of Lands emphasizes fire prevention. The department's proactive approach aims to mitigate future fire risks and protect local timber resources.
