Cherry Fire held at 113 acres despite high winds

Pullman, WALocal News

The Cherry Fire, located a mile northeast of Deary, Idaho, has burned 113 acres and is 40 percent contained as of Saturday morning. Fire officials reported minimal activity later in the day, with expectations for improved containment by nightfall. A 2-mile aircraft closure remains in effect, and Brush Creek Road is closed to the public. The fire started on Monday during an active timber cutting operation on Idaho State Endowment lands, rapidly expanding on Tuesday. High winds tested fire lines and the 184 personnel combating the blaze.

Crews are avoiding hazards like ash pits and unstable lumber while receiving assistance from local fire departments and the U. S. Forest Service. Gusty winds are predicted for Saturday, but fire managers are optimistic about reducing fire spread. Investigators have not yet determined the fire's cause, which poses ongoing challenges for containment efforts.
