Mudslide leads to highway closure

U. S. Highway 95 closed in both directions about 5 miles north of Riggins due to a significant mudslide on Friday. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced the closure, which extends from milepost 200 to 201, in a news release issued at 6 p. m.

ITD crews are working with heavy equipment to clear the road and assess any structural damage. The Idaho State Police reported the mudslide earlier in the day, around 3:30 p. m. Motorists must prepare to turn around or find alternate routes while the highway remains closed. The timeline for reopening the highway is currently unknown, creating potential disruptions for local traffic.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of highways to natural events in the region. ITD continues to monitor the situation closely as it undertakes cleanup efforts.
