The greenest building in Idaho
The University of Idaho's McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) plans to build a new 7,600-square-foot dining hall to better serve its 120 students. The facility, designed to meet the Living Building Challenge, aims to be the "greenest building in Idaho," generating more energy than it consumes while blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. MOSS Director Karla Eitel highlighted the project's focus on sustainability and community, stating, "We’re trying to be intentional with the messages that the buildings give about the relationship that we want to have with the place where we live. " The state of Idaho has provided about $7 million for the project, which includes necessary upgrades to water lines and electrical systems. Construction is anticipated to start this fall and take around two years to complete.
MOSS is also seeking an additional $4 million to fund a nearby teaching and learning center, which would provide essential indoor classroom space. Each year, MOSS hosts hundreds of students in various educational programs, including a residential science program for fifth to eighth graders. The campus will hold an open house on July 26 to showcase its offerings and plans.
