Colfax man arrested for allegedly molesting child

Pullman, WALocal News

Elijah Smith, a 19-year-old from Colfax, was arrested over the weekend for allegedly molesting a child. The Whitman County Superior Court indicated he could face life in prison if convicted of first-degree child molestation. Following a report from the child's father, Smith called law enforcement, insisting that he was falsely accused. Deputies arrested Smith after interviewing the family and witnesses, and he remains in custody at the Whitman County Jail with bail set at $100,000. Senior Deputy Prosecutor Tessa Scholl expressed concerns that Smith might flee given the serious allegations.

A sexual assault protection order was issued for the alleged victim, and Smith must avoid contact with potential witnesses and minors. The prosecutor's office has until Thursday to file charges against Smith, with his arraignment scheduled for Friday morning if charges are filed. Smith's lack of prior criminal history adds complexity to the case.
