New Case Study Highlights How Philly is Helping Residents Build City Careers

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Philadelphia's City College for Municipal Employment (CCME) program is designed to assist local residents, especially those without college degrees, in advancing their careers through skills training and education. Since its launch in October 2024, the program has enrolled over 70 participants, with 24 successfully completing their coursework this spring. Known as Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs), these participants gain access to free classes and mentorship, aimed at improving their career mobility within city government jobs. The city highlights the importance of building a workforce that reflects Philadelphia's diverse community and ensures equitable job opportunities for all residents. This initiative is part of a broader national movement led by Opportunity@Work to promote skills-first solutions in the labor market.

The CCME program not only empowers individuals but also strengthens the local economy by equipping workers with essential skills. The case study shared insights for other cities to implement similar programs, fostering a more inclusive labor market. Together, these efforts work towards a fairer future for all Philadelphians.
