Rosh Hashanah comes amid increased security at synagogues around Philly region

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Jewish communities in Philadelphia and worldwide observed the second day of Rosh Hashanah on Thursday amid heightened security due to ongoing conflicts in Israel. Local synagogues, such as B'nai Abraham Chabad and Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel, implemented security measures, including guards and police presence, to ensure congregants' safety during the Jewish New Year celebrations. Isaac Steinberg highlighted the delicate balance between safety and the message conveyed by visible security. Philadelphia police pledged to increase patrols around local Jewish and Islamic places of worship to foster a sense of safety. Rosh Hashanah services will continue through sundown Friday, with many synagogues planning additional security measures.

The observance occurs near the first anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks, further emphasizing the need for vigilance within the community.
