Philadelphia Board of Education cancels vote on federal asbestos agreement

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Philadelphia's Board of Education postponed a vote on a federal agreement related to asbestos management practices in schools due to a lack of readiness from the U. S. Department of Justice. Board President Reginald Streater informed attendees that an additional review was necessary, prompting the board to reschedule the meeting to discuss this urgent issue. The investigation into the district's handling of asbestos management practices was not previously disclosed.

Nearly all of the district's 300 buildings contain asbestos, which can cause serious health problems if disturbed. Federal law mandates comprehensive inspections every three years, with semi-annual check-ins. A spokesperson for the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania declined to comment on the investigation.

The district is also working on a facilities plan that could include new school constructions and closures. Activists expressed their concerns during the meeting, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
