Active Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast OEM Urges the Public to Take Preparedness Steps Now

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration anticipates an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season, forecasting 13 to 19 named storms, including 6 to 10 hurricanes, driven by warmer ocean temperatures. Most storm activity is expected during the peak months of August, September, and October. The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management (OEM) warns that severe weather can impact areas far from the coast, urging residents to prepare. Director Dominick Mireles stresses that preparedness leads to safer communities, highlighting the city's updated Hazard Mitigation Plan and the 2025 Severe Weather Plan. The OEM's Regional Integration Center will track storms and communicate with the National Weather Service to keep residents informed.

Residents can subscribe to text alerts for critical information about storms and safety measures. The OEM encourages families to create emergency plans and identify evacuation routes in case of severe weather. Preparedness is essential for mitigating the potential impacts of hurricanes and severe storms.
