Mayors Commission on Aging Recognizes Older Americans for the Month of May

Philadelphia, PALocal News

The Mayor’s Commission on Aging (MCOA) recognizes Older Americans Month with the theme “Flip the Script on Aging,” which focuses on combating ageism. In collaboration with the Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Services Center (PJJSC), MCOA organized an essay contest for students to reflect on their experiences with older adults. Many heartfelt submissions showcased valuable lessons learned from elders, with a notable entry describing how a teacher's late pursuit of a degree inspired a student. The contest aims to enhance writing skills and foster intergenerational connections. The winning essay honored a veteran great-grandfather, conveying messages about strength, self-reflection, and the pursuit of greatness.

MCOA's overarching goal is to improve the quality of life for older Philadelphians while challenging stereotypes about aging. The Administration for Community Living advocates for celebrating contributions of older adults in communities. Individuals are encouraged to engage in conversations about aging using the hashtags #OlderAmericansMonth and #FlipTheScriptOnAging.
