These ticks can carry Lyme disease, which can lead to serious health issues if not treated. To prevent bites, the department suggests using EPA-approved tick repellents and wearing light-colored protective clothing while outdoors. After outdoor activities, individuals should thoroughly check themselves and their children for ticks, as bites can be painless. Quick removal of ticks using clean tweezers is crucial to prevent disease transmission.

Residents should also wash their hands and the bite area after tick removal. Additionally, it’s advised to tumble dry clothing and gear on high heat to kill any remaining ticks. Pet owners should inspect their animals for ticks and discuss preventive products with their veterinarians.
