Citywide Power Up Tour Launches to Distribute Free Laptops Across Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PALocal News

The Power Up Tour, launched by Philadelphia's Office of Innovation and Technology, will distribute 500 free laptops to residents throughout the city. The initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by hosting events across 10 City Council districts, starting on May 5, 2025, at Joseph W. Catharine School. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker emphasized that access to technology is vital for economic participation and opportunity.

Each event will offer device distribution, information on low-cost internet programs, and connections to local digital resources. Although 88% of residents have broadband access, only 61% report having portable devices, underscoring the initiative's importance. City Council President Kenyatta Johnson highlighted the tour's role in reducing the digital divide. The Office of Innovation and Technology plans to empower communities by directly providing essential technology. Additional resources for digital skills training and internet access are available through local programs.
