Meet the Serve Philadelphia VISTAs who are making an impact in Community Schools

Philadelphia, PALocal News

Philadelphia's 20 City-designated Community Schools cater to nearly 13,000 students, focusing on removing barriers to learning and fostering civic engagement. Serve Philadelphia VISTAs Jessica La and Milani Walker enhance these schools by building essential resources. Jessica coordinated volunteer appreciation events, emphasizing the importance of community involvement, while Milani developed a strategic plan that increased her understanding of the schools. Through over 60 interviews, they strengthened their communication skills and connections with various stakeholders. After their supervisor transitioned unexpectedly, Maxwell Akuamoah-Boateng provided crucial support, allowing them to adapt and continue their work effectively.

Their collective efforts led to improved recommendations for food security initiatives with the Office of Children and Families. Looking ahead, Jessica and Milani are eager to apply their newly acquired skills and relationships to further enhance the Community Schools infrastructure. Their dedication exemplifies the positive impact of volunteer service in local education.
