Yanaga celebrates anniversary, honors late Chef Zama with star-studded food fest

On May 5, Chef Kevin Yanaga will host a block party to commemorate the first anniversary of Yanaga Kappo Izakaya while honoring the late Chef Hiroyuki “Zama” Tanaka. The event will feature signature dishes from popular local restaurants, including Mawn, Neighborhood Ramen, Zama, and Nihonbashi Philly, as well as special collaborations like a sukiyaki cheesesteak. Food will be served outside the restaurant on North 3rd St. from 5 to 10 p. m.

, with the 300 block of Fairmount Avenue closed to traffic. Yanaga highlighted the importance of the event, reflecting on the culinary legacy of Tanaka, who passed away last fall. Most vendors will serve inside, but outdoor offerings include snacks from Yanaga's hand roll cart and beverages from local breweries. Free entry is available for walk-ups, with food offered a-la-carte. The event not only celebrates the restaurant's success but also pays tribute to Tanaka's influence on the Philadelphia food community.

Yanaga Kappo Izakaya also operates a hidden eight-seat omakase experience and offers happy hour specials throughout the week.
