New initiative aims to increase naloxone use in Black community

Philadelphia, PALocal News

A new initiative in Philadelphia is working to raise awareness and accessibility of naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal drug, within the Black community. Led by Vital Strategies, the campaign includes partnerships with community organizations and advertisements to highlight the rising overdose rates among Black residents, which have surged by 87% from 2018 to 2022. Despite a national decline in overdose rates, the Black community continues to face increasing challenges, as noted by experts who point to stigma and lack of outreach as contributing factors. The campaign's message emphasizes the urgency of carrying naloxone, with city officials advocating for immediate action during overdose incidents. Vital Strategies is also providing resources like fentanyl test strips and drug treatment services to residents through door-to-door outreach.

The initiative is part of a larger effort being implemented in six other cities, supported by funding from the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Community leaders stress that overdose risks are not confined to specific neighborhoods, urging a citywide focus on this public health crisis. The campaign aims to empower individuals and communities to take proactive steps in saving lives.
