City Announces the Return of Kensington Nuisance Fire Task Force
The Philadelphia Office of Public Safety has announced the relaunch of the Nuisance Fire Task Force in Kensington ahead of the winter months. Established in 2024, the initiative aims to combat rubbish fires and connect affected individuals with vital social services. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker highlighted the need for improved safety as cold weather approaches, stating that the goal is to enhance the quality of life for all residents. The Task Force, led by the Overdose Response Unit, operates nightly from 8 p.
m. to 4 a. m. in the 24th and 25th Police Districts and aims to reduce fire incidents by 20% this season. This year, the City has streamlined operations to improve service delivery, emphasizing collaboration among agencies.
The Task Force includes staff from Merakey, a specialized fire apparatus, and representatives from the Philadelphia Police Department. Adam Geer, Chief Public Safety Director, noted the importance of mitigating fire dangers for both residents and unhoused individuals.
