City of Philadelphia Releases Vision Zero Action Plan 2030
Philadelphia launched the Vision Zero Action Plan 2030 today, committing to eliminate traffic deaths by 2030. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker emphasized the importance of community feedback, stating nearly 3,000 residents contributed to shaping the plan. The report indicates that fatal crashes in 2024 surpassed pre-2020 levels, disproportionately affecting pedestrians and cyclists, who represented two-thirds of fatalities despite making up less than 10 percent of all crashes. An updated High Injury Network identifies key streets responsible for 80 percent of traffic deaths, using crash data from 2019 to 2023.
The Philadelphia Department of Public Health revealed demographic disparities in traffic-related fatalities, with Black and Hispanic residents facing higher risks. The plan will monitor these disparities over time and aims to implement safety improvements accordingly. Action items will fall under categories like Safer Streets & Speeds and Safer People, with annual progress reports through the Vision Zero Annual Report. Additional initiatives include expanding traffic safety education and high-visibility enforcement campaigns to improve compliance with traffic laws.
