City Announces the Return of Kensington Nuisance Fire Task Force
The Kensington Nuisance Fire Task Force in Philadelphia has been relaunched to address the rise in rubbish fires during the winter months. Established in 2024, the Task Force aims to reduce fire incidents by 20% while connecting residents to essential social services. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker highlighted the urgency of this initiative as cold weather approaches, emphasizing the safety and well-being of residents. The Task Force will operate from 8 p.
m. to 4 a. m. through March 2026, focusing on the 24th and 25th Police Districts. The initiative includes collaboration among the Office of Public Safety, the Fire Department, and community organizations like Merakey.
Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson noted that even small fires can escalate, posing serious risks to residents. The Task Force aims to enhance operational efficiency by centralizing efforts and breaking down silos between agencies. This comprehensive approach addresses both immediate safety concerns and the long-term needs of vulnerable populations in Kensington.
