Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC)
On November 21, Philadelphia's Sanitation Commissioner Crystal Jacobs Shipman announced the winners of the 2025 Clean Block Contest at the annual Clean Block Banquet held at the Fairmount Horticulture Center. The contest evaluated blocks based on resident engagement, cleanliness, beautification efforts, and property improvements, culminating in a $1,000 prize for the top winner, 1300 South 15th Street in Point Breeze. Other notable winners included 3300 Rand Street, 6300 Lawnton Street, and 900 South Alden Street, who received cash prizes of $700, $500, and $300, respectively. The PMBC also recognized individuals with Community Spirit Awards, highlighting contributions to neighborhood improvement. Junior Block Captain Riley Donsetle, Joyce Lloyd, and Syreeta Sowell were among the honorees for their exceptional community service.
Additionally, new Commissioner Awards were introduced to honor former Streets Commissioners Clarena Tolson and Carlton Williams for their public service efforts. The PMBC's initiatives, dating back to 1938, involve over 6,500 block captains promoting civic pride and community engagement. These awards motivate residents to maintain their neighborhoods and contribute to a cleaner Philadelphia.
