City Announces the Return of Kensington Nuisance Fire Task Force

The Philadelphia Office of Public Safety has announced the relaunch of the Nuisance Fire Task Force in Kensington to combat the rise in rubbish fires as winter approaches. Established in 2024, the task force aims to extinguish fires, clear debris, and connect residents with vital social services, particularly for those unhoused. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker emphasized the urgency of reinstating this initiative due to the rapid onset of cold weather. The task force seeks to lower fire incidents by 20% this winter, directly addressing public safety risks.

It will operate nightly in the 24th and 25th Police Districts from 8 p. m. to 4 a. m. The initiative includes collaboration with various city agencies to streamline operations and improve service delivery.

Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson noted the importance of identifying hazards to prevent dangerous fires. This coordinated approach aims to enhance the quality of life for Kensington residents while supporting first responders with social services.
