City Announces the Return of Kensington Nuisance Fire Task Force
The Philadelphia Office of Public Safety has announced the relaunch of the Nuisance Fire Task Force in Kensington, set to combat rubbish fires and connect residents with essential services during the winter months. Originally established in 2024, the Task Force aims to reduce fire incidents by 20% this season. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker highlighted the urgency of the initiative due to the quick onset of cold weather. The Task Force, led by the Overdose Response Unit, operates nightly from 8 p.
m. to 4 a. m. in the 24th and 25th Police Districts. It includes staff from Merakey for social services, a specialized fire apparatus, and a representative from the Philadelphia Police Department to ensure safety.
Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson noted that even small fires pose significant risks, especially in winter. The Task Force's streamlined operations focus on improving service delivery and community safety. This initiative addresses both immediate fire hazards and the broader quality of life for Kensington residents, particularly those experiencing homelessness.
