Vision Zero Philadelphia Celebrates the Completion of the Tenth Memorial Neighborhood Slow Zone
Philadelphia's Tenth Memorial Neighborhood Slow Zone officially opened, part of a broader effort to enhance pedestrian safety in the city. The zone includes a 20 MPH speed limit, 51 speed cushions, and various pedestrian-friendly features, all designed to protect local schoolchildren. Community advocate Donna Price highlighted the collaborative effort between residents and city officials in designing these improvements. Michael Carroll of the Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems noted that reducing vehicle speeds is essential for the Vision Zero initiative, which seeks to eliminate traffic deaths. The Slow Zone includes institutions like St.
Joe’s Preparatory School and Ingersoll Park, enhancing access to vital community resources. Safe Routes Philly contributed by educating students on safe travel practices during the ribbon-cutting event. Philadelphia plans to expand its Neighborhood Slow Zone Program, with six additional zones in various planning stages. This initiative represents a significant step towards safer streets for all residents.
