City Announces the Return of Kensington Nuisance Fire Task Force

The Kensington Nuisance Fire Task Force has been reinstated by Philadelphia officials to combat the rise in rubbish fires during the winter months. Established in 2024, the Task Force focuses on extinguishing fires, clearing debris, and connecting residents with vital social services. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker stated the initiative is crucial for enhancing safety as cold weather sets in. The Task Force aims to reduce rubbish fires by 20% this season, operating nightly from 8 p.

m. to 4 a. m. through March 2026 in the 24th and 25th Police Districts. It includes staff from Merakey, a specialized fire apparatus, and a police representative to ensure safety.

Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson highlighted the importance of addressing fire hazards to protect the community. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to improving the quality of life for all Philadelphia residents, particularly the unhoused population.
