Schools Across Philadelphia March for Ruby Bridges Day
Philadelphia celebrated Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 14, with schools across the city participating to honor Bridges’ legacy of courage and justice. Safe Routes Philly and Vision Zero PHL organized the event, encouraging students to walk together while discussing anti-racism and equity. Councilmember Cindy Bass introduced a resolution to officially recognize the day, emphasizing Bridges' historic significance as a civil rights icon. Schools such as Alexander Adaire and Southwark engaged in activities that fostered community and activism among students. “Walking, biking, and rolling to school builds community,” stated Caroline Robertson, Vision Zero Education Coordinator.
The event also marked the conclusion of Safe Routes Philly’s Walktober 2025 program, which saw hundreds of students walking together throughout the season. According to the National Center for Safe Routes to School, such events can lead to improved student attendance and behavior. Philadelphia’s students continue to draw inspiration from Bridges’ bravery, highlighting the ongoing pursuit of justice and kindness in their communities.
