City opens Emergency Food Security Grant applications, deadline to apply November 5
Philadelphia's Emergency Food Security Grant applications are now open, aiming to support local food organizations during the federal government shutdown that has disrupted SNAP and other food access programs. The city will distribute up to $2 million in grants, with amounts ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, and applications are due by November 5. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker led a convening of over 100 nonprofit organizations to coordinate rapid responses to the food crisis. Funds are expected to be allocated by November 10, ensuring timely support for affected families.
In addition, the city is introducing $500,000 in Emergency Revenue Replacement Grants for small food retailers, aimed at sustaining food access in neighborhoods. Tiffany W. Thurman, Chief of Staff, emphasized the city’s dedication to food security and the critical role of partnerships with local organizations. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health will also hold virtual sessions to assist applicants. The city’s Free Food Finder tool is available to help residents locate nearby resources for groceries and meals.
