Celebrating American Archives Month!
Philadelphia is gearing up for its 250th birthday celebration next year, marked by an exhibit from City Archives that highlights pivotal moments in its history. This exhibit, created by archives staff and a student intern, will focus on the Centennial celebration of 1876, Freedom Week, and the iconic Liberty Bell, coinciding with American Archives Month in October. The Centennial featured significant food innovations, including root beer introduced by Charles Elmer Hires, showcasing the city's long-standing love for food. Freedom Week commemorates the Declaration of Independence, with photographs documenting celebrations from the 1950s to the 1990s. The Liberty Bell, a central symbol of American democracy, features in the exhibit through original documents and architectural plans.
Notably, plans for a bomb shelter for the Liberty Bell were proposed in 1942, illustrating the city's historical commitment to preserving its symbols. The exhibit offers a unique opportunity for the public to connect with Philadelphia's rich heritage through original artifacts. City Archives encourages residents and visitors to explore these historical treasures in person.
