An update on the Cool Pavement Pilot Project
The City of Philadelphia launched the Cool Pavement pilot project in summer 2024 to combat extreme heat, particularly in neighborhoods where temperatures exceed surrounding areas by nearly 30°F. The project tests a light-colored sealant from CoolSeal by GuardTop, which aims to lower air temperatures and combat the urban heat island effect. Findings from Phase One indicated that the sealant-coated pavement remained cooler than untreated asphalt but did not significantly lower air temperatures. Collaborating researchers from the University of Pennsylvania are measuring various cooling benefits and evaluating the sealant's durability under Philadelphia's weather conditions. The next phase, initiated in August 2025, will focus on applying two coats of sealant to park pavements.
The City aims to determine if these treatments can provide lasting cooling benefits for residents. This project aligns with broader sustainability efforts to create healthier urban environments. Continued assessment will inform future urban planning and heat mitigation strategies.
