Rooted in Culture, Growing the Future Norris Square Neighborhood Project and Hispanic Heritage Month
The Norris Square Neighborhood Project (NSNP) integrates cultural programming into the lives of Philadelphia youth, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month beyond a single occasion. Established in 1973, NSNP’s Semillas del Futuro summer program allows students to engage in art and gardening while exploring their Puerto Rican heritage. Partnerships with local artists and organizations provide students with invaluable skills and mentorship opportunities. Dominick Nieves, initially a reserved artist, gained confidence and leadership through NSNP’s career-connected learning programs, leading to internships and professional growth. Liliana Colon, a senior at Central High School, discovered the power of Afro-Puerto Rican dance, which helped her express herself as she prepares for college.
NSNP’s initiatives contribute significantly to fostering cultural pride and community resilience among youth. The project illustrates the importance of cultural engagement in shaping future leaders. By empowering students through art and tradition, NSNP ensures that Hispanic heritage remains a vibrant part of Philadelphia’s identity.
